Manos del Uruguay Yarn

Manos del Uruguay yarns have a unique story. 'Manos' was created in 1968 to provide jobs for women in their rural hometowns in Uruguay allowing them to provide for their families and be independent while staying in their home villages and keeping their roots and traditional skills. Manos is still committed to the same objective and was made a member of the World Fair Trade Organisation in 2009. Manos de Uruguay spin and dye their yarns in cooperatives located in the small towns in Uruguay's countryside. Each Manos skein has a tag with the name of the artisan who made it and the cooperative location. The yarns are created in Chunky through to Lace weight. They are hand dyed to produce a rich colour pallette with the subtle irregularities which the hand of each artisan gives to it.

Manos del Uruguay Yarn Colours

Colour is a passion for Manos Del Uruguay and their unique yarn colours are their trademark. They combine research and experimentation with traditional techniques and 40 years of experience. The colours are never completely solid, they have beautiful nuances and tonal variations. To achieve their spectacular space dyed colours, they dye each skein up to 6 times to achieve the complexity of a true work of art.

The main content of Manos de Uruguay yarn is wool from local sheep breeders. Sheep in Uruguay graze freely on natural grass pastures and they are mulesing free. Other beloved natural fibres are also used such as baby alpaca, pima cotton, silk and cashmere
