Mohair Wool

Mohair wool, produced from the hair of the Angora goat, is considered by many crafters and wearers a luxury yarn. Why? Because its construction of flat scales makes it feel smooth and soft compared with some standard sheep's wool. This inherent characteristic is, therefore, favoured by those sensitive skin.

This yarn also takes dye extremely well due to its silky-smooth hollow fibres ... hence the fabulous colour range produced by favourite brands such as Rowan and DROPS.

Mohair's 'fluffy' texture makes it fun to knit and crochet with and is often used together with other yarns to produce garments with a gentle halo effect.

Pattern inspiration using mohair wool

Mohair is a strong wool and favoured by knitters the world over. Although not as soft as alpaca or cashmere, it is warmer than other fibres and is often blended with wool for that reason.

Wool of this kind is known best for its sheen and the halo appearance that its fluffiness can give to garments made using it. Novice knitters may struggle with the especially fluffy varieties but we have a selection of smoother yarns that are easier to use.
